Art in Medical Contexts: How Creative Processes Can Raise Awareness of Neurological Disorders

A considerable number of academic and curatorial programs have been investigating the complex relationship between art, science and technology in recent years. The seminar at the University of Gothenburg aims to examine potential and mutual benefits in strengthening such a relation through the presentations of five invited speakers, whose respective practices have been dealing with Alzheimer disease from different angles: neurology, visual arts, psychology, music and sound studies.

How can artists and scientists communicate with each other? Do scientists need artists to raise awareness about neurological diseases? And can a scientific purpose be reached through creative tools?

This seminar is part of the Residency Program for Italian visual artist Valentina Vetturi, at the Italian Cultural Institute in Stockholm, and originates from her project in progress Alzheimer Cafè (2014-ongoing). It is organized by Prof. Henrik Zetterberg (University of Gothenburg) and Valentina Sansone (independent curator of contemporary art, Stockholm).
