Maya De Leo will present at Italian Cultural Institute Auditorium ”Queer. Storia culturale della comunità LGBT+” (”Queer. Cultural history of the LGBT + community”), a book published in Italian by Einaudi in 2021. The essay deals with the history of the LGBT+ movement in the West, from the 18th century to today, through the major events that have marked its development: from the birth of nation-states to the two world wars, through the Stonewall revolt and the HIV crisis, up to the queer revolution of the 90s and the recent evolutions after the 2000s. A unique reading across three centuries of history, stretching far beyond the destinies of a minority group, ”Queer” questions our present at large.
Maya De Leo is Associate Professor of History of Homosexuality at the DAMS – University of Turin and former Associate Professor of Gender History at the Master’s Degree Course in Historical Sciences of the University of Genoa. She is a scholar of LGBT + history and queer theory, she earned a PhD in History at the University of Pisa with a study of the representations of homosexuality between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The event will be moderated by Sara Garbagnoli, independent researcher associated with LEGS, the research centre on gender and sexuality studies at the University of Paris.
