Italian Design Day – 100 cities, 100 design ambassadors

Manolo de Giorgi, architect and design historian who lives in Milan, former editor of Mono and Domus, will be the “Italian Design” during the first edition of the Italian Design Day that will be held in 100 cities around the world at the same time. Manolo De Giorgi will be in conversation with the renown Swedish designer Ola Rune on the theme ”Cultural tradition and industry: the craftmanship component in Italian and Swedish design”. Moderator of the conversation is Sofia Hallström, design journalist and editor at Rum Design.

The Italian design day will not be limited to the roundtable, but in all the cities DeLightFul, a short film by Matteo Garrone will open the evening. The short video will be presented during the 56th edition of Salone del Mobile in Milano.

On this occasion, the Institute will be illuminated by Foscarini lamps, italian lighting design’s flagship brand and a special selection of artists photographs will be displayed from the project Inventario, the bookzine winner of Compasso d’Oro award. Inventario looks at the design scene, architecture and art with a lighted and free glance, created and directed by Beppe Finessi, supported and promoted by Foscarini and published by Corraini Edizioni.

Participants will receive a free copy of the latest issue of CARTADITALIA, dedicated to Italian design and edited by the Italian Culture Institute in Bruxelles. Curated by Beppe Finessi, CARTADITALIA is today the most complete guide on Italian design, published in four languages (IT FR NL EN).

Between 11 am and 4 pm, non stop screenings of short documentary videos on selected personalities of Italian Design (Buzzi, Mendini, Sotssas and Magistretti). Videos, courtesies of Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Museo Alessi, Corraini edizioni publisher and Fondazione Vico Magistretti, are all subtitled in English.

In view of the growing importance of Italian design, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural and Environmental Heritage and ITA – Italian Trade Agency, has proclaimed the 2nd of March 2017 (just before Milan’s Furniture Fair, 4-9 April 2017) Italian Design Day.

On this day, 100 cities all over the world will host roundtables hosting an “Italian design ambassador” selected among the big names of Italian design, entrepreneurs, critics, academics, communicators and “Under 35” designers. These ambassadors will illustrate the history and the new tendencies of a sector whose accomplishments and planning skills have produced outstanding and unique results.

The conversation will be held in English.
