Concert ”The Orpheus Lyra and Pulcinella’s hunger”

Claudio Ronco and Emanuela Vozza present a concert for cello, with sonatas composed by Salvatore Lanzetti (Neaples, 1710 – Turin, 1780) and Emanuel Siprutini (Italy? Ca 1739 – Netherlands, 1790).

Despite their backgrounds, Lanzetti and Siprutini were virtuoso cellists and became internationally acclaimed during their lifetime.

Salvatore Lanzetti was born in a poor family in Naples. He studied at the conservatory of San Pietro a Majella, which at that time gave to orphans and poor children the opportunity to become professional musicians. He became rapidly famous and started to perform in France, Germany and especially London.

Emanuel Siprutini was a Jewish cellist. We do not know anything about his early life or education, other than his Jewish name, Shiprut, which was translated into Siprutini. Starting from 1740, there are reports of his concerts in the Netherlands. In 1765, when the British Parliament passed the “Jewish Naturalization Act”, he decided to settle in London. Here, in 1764, he met Leopold Mozart.

Programme:

Salvatore Lanzetti, Sonatas from op.I n.5 (publ. Amsterdam 1736) e from op.5 e 6 (Paris 1750, London 1760)

Emanuel Siprutini, Sonatas from op.3 (publ. Londra 1760) , op.5 e op.7 (London 1764 e 1770).
