On the occasion of the celebration of the official Gala of the Princess of Asturias Awards this week, the Cervantes Institute of Stockholm and the Italian Cultural Institute in Stockholm come together to pay tribute to the conductor and composer Ennio Morricone, author of some of the most popular soundtracks of the last half century. The italian musician, recently deceased, had been awarded the 2020 Arts Prize, along with his colleague, the american John Williams.
The Princess of Asturias Awards for the Arts, which have been held annually since 1981, are one of the most relevant international awards and the list of winners is made up of creators of the size of Bob Dylan, Norman Foster, Paco de Lucía, Martin Scorsese or Sebastiao Salgado, among others. It is the third time that an Italian artist receives it, the previous two were Vittorio Gassman (1997) and Ricardo Mutti (2011).
The tribute to Morricone at the Cervantes Institute in Stockholm will consist of two parts:
The first will be the screening of the film Tie me up! Tie me down! (1989), directed by Pedro Almodóvar, for which Morricone made the original soundtrack. It was the first and unique collaboration between the two artists. This composition was nominated for the Goya Awards of the Spanish Film Academy, although it did not obtain the award that year. The second part of this session and tribute will be a music live performance of Nello Salza (trumpet) accompanied by Simonetta Tancredi (piano).
Salza has played in over 400 soundtracks of international films. He is worldwide known as “the Trumpet of the Italian Cinema” and boasts an enormous production. He is the favourite trumpet player of M° Morricone’s who was himself a trumpet player and lover of this instrument. With him he cooperated for 250 movies such as “A fistful of dollars”, “The good, the bad and the bad”, “The Days of Heaven”, “Mission” and “The Untouchables”.
He will perform sound track from Once upon a time in America and Once upon a time in the West, which are part of the Time trilogy of Sergio Leone together with Duck, You Sucker!, gives us back the greatness of Morricone through the musical representation of the passage of time, the nostalgia of memory, the melancholy of lost affections (friends, loves), and the epic of youth.
