Vårt initiativ Neapolis 2500, organiserat för att fira 2500 år sedan Neapels grundande, fortsätter torsdag 27 november kl. 18 med konferensen Art and magnificence in Baroque Naples med Paola D’Agostino, direktör för Musei Reali di Torino.
Art and magnificence in Baroque Naples
During his visit in Italy in 1688, François Maximillien Misson was impressed by the exceptional number of churches and artistic treasures of Naples. In his Voyage d’Italie, he wrote: “I can tell you without exaggerating that this is beyond imagination. […] Everywhere you see masterpieces of art. You will always find yourself continuously surprised”.
The conference will look at some of the most mesmerizing Baroque monuments in the city. Caravaggio, Guido Reni, Jusepe de Ribera, Luca Giordano and Francesco Solimena – to name only a few painters – as well as Cosimo Fanzago, Giuliano Finelli and Lorenzo Vaccaro – architects and sculptors lesser known, but equally talented – cladded the city in kaleidoscopic Baroque forms.
Naples was also the capital of the Spanish Vice kingdom, and the conference will illustrate the Viceroys’ patronage in the embellishment of the city, and in the commission of many lavish works of art destined to Spain. During the seventeenth century, Naples was not only one of the most prolific artistic centers, but it was also a crossroad of art trading in the Mediterranean basin and beyond.
Paola D’Agostino är konsthistoriker, expert på italiensk renässans- och barock-skulptur. Hon tog kandidat- och doktorsexamen vid Università “Federico II” i Neapel och masterexamen vid Courtauld Institute of Art och University College i London. Hon har gett ut en bok om Cosimo Fanzago scultore – den störste konstnären under den napolitanska barocken.
2015 till 2024 var hon direktör för Bargellomuseerna i Florens och hon har lång erfarenhet som curator utomlands, från Metropolitan Museum of Art i New York, som Senior Research Associate vid Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, vid Yale University Art Gallery, som Nina and Lee Griggs Assistant Curator in European Art.
2017, under hennes mandat som direktör för Bargellomuseerna, fick institutionen medalj från Italienska Republikens President, Sergio Mattarella, för organisationen av utställningen “La fabbrica della bellezza. La Manifattura Ginori e il suo popolo di Statue”. Hon var dessutom ansvarig för organisationen av utställningen “Donatello. Il Rinascimento”, curerad av Francesco Caglioti och samorganiserad med Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi. I London fick utställningen det prestigefulla Apollo Award för bästa utställning 2022.
17 juli 2025 valdes hon till Direktör för Musei Reali di Torino.
