Screening of the documentary “Viaggio in Italia: la Corte Costituzionale nelle carceri” directed by Fabio Cavalli

The Italian Cultural Institute presents, in collaboration with the Constitutional Court of the Italian Republic the screening of the documentary “Viaggio in Italia: la Corte Costituzionale nelle carceri” directed by Fabio Cavalli.

The screening will be introduced by a talkon the Italian and Swedish justice system; between Silvana Sciarra, Judge at the Italian Constitutional Court, Anders Eka, President of the Supreme Court and Thomas Bull, Justice of the Supreme Administrative Court on the italian and Swedish justice system.

In the documentary “Viaggio in Italia: la Corte Costituzionale nelle carceri” directed by Fabio Cavalli, seven judges of the Italian Constitutional Court meet the prisoners of seven Italian penitentiary institutions: Rebibbia in Rome, San Vittore in Milan, the juvenile prison of Nisida, Sollicciano in Florence, Marassi in Genova, Terni, and the women’s section in Lecce.
A penitentiary police officer accompanies them, thus establishing a link between ‘the inside’ and ‘the outside’.

1956 is the year in which the Constitutional Court began to operate, with the exclusive task to rule on the constitutionality of the laws. Over the years, its decisions deeply affected people’s lives and institutional balances among state powers. Its reputation grew together with its independence and with an open attitude in capturing new aspirations among citizens and establishing new rights.

In 2018 the Court approached the prison system with an unusual initiative. Leaving the austere building in which it sits, it started a tour of some prisons. The first visit took place in Rome, in the prison named Rebibbia, where 12 judges met 220 prisoners, together with media and institutional authorities. A live stream allowed 11,000 prisoners from other prisons in Italy to follow this event, which has no precedent.

The documentary, which includes sections of this first visit and of subsequent ones, shows the encounter of two different humanities, apparently in contradiction to one another: constitutional legality and illegality, the latter combined with social marginalization. The vicinity of these separate worlds is portrayed through listening and dialogue, turning this event in an opportunity for a mutual exchange of knowledge, experiences and emotions.

The documentary displays a new way of communicating, offering constitutional values as a common ground. The Constitutional Court shows awareness of its role as a transparent institution, capable to listen and to talk to people in simple words.

The screening is in italian with english subtitles.
The talks will be held in english.
