International Seminar: "Architecture as propaganda in twentieth-century totalitarian regimes. History and heritage"

International Seminar:

The seminar will illustrate and discuss some questions related to "Architecture as propaganda in twentieth-century totalitarian regimes. History and heritage" (Florence: Edizioni Polistampa, 2018), a conference volume from an interdisciplinary conference held at the Swedish Institute in Rome. The book explores how prominent architects conveyed the political programmes of the regimes through buildings, monuments and urban planning. When the regimes collapsed they left a rich architectural legacy which remains today as an evident and sometimes awkward part of the cityscape. Examples illustrate different approaches to the management of this difficult architectural heritage, reflecting the varying ambitions of former totalitarian nations to confront their dark past.
