Tombs of Tarquinia between reality and its representation

A conference in English by Matilde Marzullo

held at Medelhavsmuseet in Stockholm

The painted tombs of Tarquinia (UNESCO heritage site since 2004) are one of the most well-known and investigated phenomena of the Etruscan funerary context. They never cease to fascinate anyone who approaches them since the centuries of the first discoveries. Since the Renaissance artists and scholars populated the great Monterozzi necropolis in order to observe and immortalize these monuments. Centuries of systematic research have considerably extended the number of potentially painted hypogeai in Tarquinia and this type of reproduction offers contents and details that are now difficult to distinguish, or lost forever. The recent publications of M. Marzullo (Grotte Cornetane – 2016 and Buried Spaces and Painted Dimensions – 2017) allow us to observe these data as a whole. For the first time, this brings together all the graphic, architectural and descriptive information. The result is a system of tools created for the specific needs of Etruscan funeral wall painting. This reveal that the qualities characterizing Tarquinia seem to distinguish it from other Etruscan metropolis. This suggests the existence of specific beliefs at the heart of the local design of the funerary space that could shed light on the reasons, goals, social value of these monuments within the community.

Matilde Marzullo is a Research Doctor in Etruscology. Since 2009 she is part of ”Tarquinia Project” founded by Maria Bonghi Jovino. Since 2015 she is part of the Coordinated Research Center ”Tarquinia Project” of the University of Milan, directed by Giovanna Bagnasco Gianni. She is responsible for the excavations at the ’monumental complex’ site, and she has in charge specific research fields on the reconstruction of the historical profile of the ancient city and the necropolis. She is the author and co-author of publications covering both these subjects and she realized the corpus of the Tarquinian funerary painting, as well as the Archaeological Map of the ancient city.
