Marco Ruffini

Imagining Art History. Vasari and his Book of Drawings

This lecture explores the relation between Vasari’s collection of old masters’ drawings and his idea of art history, which evolved in the two editions of the Lives of the artists (1550, 1568): from a collection of artists’ biographies to an aspired illustrated history of art.

Eliana Carrara

Vasari’s Drawings from Florence to Stockholm. With some Observations about the “Libro de’ disegni” and its fate.

The talk will focus on a pair of drawings by Vasari that document the important decorative work in Palazzo Vecchio, both in the Rooms completed during the first phase of the frescoes (in the second half of the 1550s) and for the Salone dei Cinquecento, frescoed from 1563-1573.

The documented presence in the Crozat collection of the two folios now in the collections of the National Museum in Stockholm will then offer the cue to reflect not only on the massive dispersion of Vasari’s graphic testimonies, but also on the “Book of Drawings”, which he set up throughout his life to collect the drawings of the most famous artists treated in his “Lives”.
