Stockholm Design Week – Design Diplomacy

Design Diplomacy invites the design community to a dynamic talk on the theme of design masters heritage, accompanied by an authentic Italian aperitivo, Vetz

Design Diplomacy is a concept launched at Helsinki Design Week 2016. It provides a deck of questions as a starting point for both easy and deeper discussions about design. In this event two leading design profiles from two countries meet and share their experiences with the audience. In our edition at Italian Cultural Institute Rosanna Pavoni, Director of Vico Magistretti Foundation, and Daniel Golling, Curator of the collections at ArkDes, will dialogue together on topics related to the great masters of design – like Vico Magistretti – and their importance in contemporary creativity and production.

Rosanna Pavoni also inaugurates “Vico Magistretti and his legacy in Scandinavian design“, the exhibition dedicated to Vico Magistretti, a leading figure among the Italian designers. Magistretti inaugurated a new season in the international design, finding many estimators in Scandinavia. This exhibition – organized in collaboration with the Vico Magistretti Foundation in Milan – presents many historical collector’s pieces loaned with the courtesy of Möbeldesignmuseum in Stockholm. Furthermore, a section investigates Magistretti’s legacy. The heritage of Magistretti’s iconic personality is highlighted in the activity of some of well-famed Swedish designers as Thomas Sandell, Mia Cullin, Matti Klenell, Halleroed. The designers have been selected by Daniel Golling, Curator of the collections at ArkDes.

On the same evening, we are going to present two other exhibitions: “Anonimo Contemporaneo“, a project by the Italian designer Francesco Faccin, and “Carpets as art pieces“, a limited series of design carpets produced by Nodus

Anonimo Contemporaneo” is a limited edition contemporary design series by Francesco Faccin dedicated to the Romanella, a chair that belongs to the Italian popular tradition. “I found this chair in via dei Sediari in Rome in 2013″ – said Faccin – “The artisan told me that there are traces of this type of chair in some frescoes in Pompeii (…) A product that remains in production for 2000 years? I am not dreaming of a mythical primitivism or a return to the past, but rather a possible model to start designing for the contemporary world”.

Carpets as art pieces” is a collaboration with the Italian manufacturer Nodus. Five unique carpets designed by artists who work in Northern Europe – Luca Nichetto, Färg&Blanche, Studio Job, FRONT, FormaFantasma – will be inserted seamlessly in the original interiors by Gio Ponti. Nodus is a craft workshop with a cultural plan: the oldest traditions and knowledge in the art of carpet design are reinterpreted using the vision of the most innovating Designers and Architects.
